X-Ray Policies

X-rays allow us to see, and seeing is knowing. To not see is to guess, and we cannot guess when it comes to your oral health! Without x-rays, we cannot properly diagnose conditions in and around the mouth. We would not be able to do our jobs properly and would not be able to provide our patients with thorough and comprehensive care.

X-rays are the standard of care. The Texas State Board of Dental Examiners requires dentists to take X-rays. Dental insurance companies also require X-rays to process claims and may deny claims that do not have the proper X-rays attached.

Requirements:
- Full X-rays are REQUIRED for all new patients
- If you have x-rays from a previous dentist, we can evaluate them but will still need to take our own x-rays if they are determined to be outdated, unclear, incomplete or undiagnostic.
- Bitewing and periapical radiographs are taken at every 6 month checkup.
- Panoramic or full mouth series radiographs are taken every 5 years or as needed.
- Additional x-rays are taken at the discretion of the treating dentist, no more than the minimum that is necessary for diagnosis and treatment.
What if I’m concerned about too much exposure and radiation?
We use the latest modern digital x-ray systems that are quick and comfortable and emit extremely small amounts of radiation compared to traditional x-ray systems. Dental x-rays are not like medical x-rays and expose less radiation than many common foods and environmental exposures in daily life. In fact, x-ray aprons are no longer a requirement for routine dental x-rays. However, they are still made available in our office, upon request.
What about children?
- Infants and young toddlers who are not yet able to cooperate are exempt from x-rays.
- It is actually more crucial to take regular x-rays on children/teens than on older adults because they are still growing and developing, transitioning from baby teeth to permanent teeth, and are generally at higher risk of dental decay that spreads more rapidly.
- Early intervention is crucial in younger patients, and x-rays allow us to see things we wouldn’t be able to catch during a visual exam.
What if I’m pregnant?
The ACOG and the ADA recommend NOT skipping x-rays in normal pregnancies.
However, if you are high-risk or otherwise not comfortable taking x-rays while pregnant and have no dental concerns, you may opt out. X-rays will be taken at your next postpartum visit.
What if I have other health concerns?
If you have a medical contraindication to x-rays (such as recent radiation therapy to the head/neck region), please provide a clearance from your physician to be exempt from x-rays.
What about financial concerns?
X-rays are generally covered for insurance patients and are also included in our cash fees. We do not charge additional out-of-pocket fees for any additional x-rays that are ordered during your visit.
What if I still want to refuse x-rays?
- Please understand that when you refuse x-rays, you are compromising on our ability to provide you with optimal dental care.
- If you refuse x-rays, we may reschedule your appointment or perform a visual screening. You can still have your teeth cleaned if you have x-rays on file within the last year.
- No more than 1 refusal allowed per year. We cannot continue to treat patients who repeatedly refuse x-rays for more than 1 year.
- You always have the right to decline x-rays or any other procedures; however, due to liability concerns, we cannot continue to see patients who refuse our recommendations.
I have reviewed and understand the x-ray policies above and consent to the use of radiographs as recommended by my dentist.
