INFORMED CONSENT Inhalation Sedation (Nitrous Oxide-Oxygen)

We offer our patients a variety of pain relievers and sedatives, according to each individual's needs and desires.

Novocaine (local anesthesia) is designed to eliminate pain, which it does well. It does not eliminate the tension and anxiety generally associated with dental treatment in the minds of many people.

We have an inhalation sedative available. It is breathed in along with oxygen from a nosepiece. It gives you a relaxed, detached feeling; free of tension and anxiety. You will not go to sleep, but will remain awake and cooperative. After your treatment is completed you will breathe plain oxygen for several minutes until the effects of the sedative are gone. This sedative does not take the place of Novocaine, but is used along with it. It is in no way compulsory and you may request only Novocaine if you wish.

Some patients experience certain effects while receiving Nitrous Oxide-oxygen sedation. These may be, but are not limited to:

Shivering, especially after sedation, may also attribute to the dilation of the blood vessels.
Excessive perspiration: The peripheral blood vessels enlarge somewhat during sedation and may cause this.
Nausea- very few people experience slight nausea. If this happens to you, simply mention it to any staff member. Breathing pure oxygen can eliminate this quickly.

I understand this sedative procedure and realize that it is purely elective on my part. Any fee(s) involved have also been explained to me
